Before Sunrise

Before Sunrise

A very early morning trip to the Cobb. I waited for the sun to rise in its perfect spot. There was mystery around me, gradually lightening up the familiar surroundings.

The Crabbing Bridge

The Crabbing Bridge

In the tidal areas around Keyhaven on the south coast of England, the everchanging views keep me painting. The water levels change every day, if not every hour. The shape, colour, light, reflections are all a feast for the eye.

Waiting for Ophelia, Milford

Waiting for Ophelia, Milford

This is one of several paintings I have made in response to the gathering storm Ophelia in October. Whether high on an escarpment, or down at the level of the shore, as in this one, the evidence of upheaval was everywhere. Very exhilerating!

Morning Walk

Morning Walk

Sunrise time at low tide, the light is low at first and details come into focus slowly. Developed from water colour sketches made at the time. A lone walker braves the semidarkness to enjoy first light and the coming to life of the shoreline. Painted in oils with palette knife and brushes on gesso board.

Painting in Lyme Regis is one of my favourite things. Steep hills, sea views, exhilaration. This one is from May 2017.
The abstract qualities of rooftops and driveways against the expansive view was inspiring to me. The clear intense light of early summer was intoxicating and almost blinding.

Down the Hill, September

Down the Hill, September

I have painted and drawn this view down a hill in Lyme Regis, this time in September. The sea is at the bottom of the hill, and I am drawn to it as is the figure in the painting. Foilage and rooftops add to the composition. The light is coming from the east, the time is morning and I imagine the person is walking to work.

Sunrise in Lyme Regis in the month of June. The butter yellow sun splashes the sky awake. Arising EARLY to catch the moment, I made very quick water colour sketches - recording the colour and shapes the earth and sky emerge from darkness.
